Day Six: Semi-Finals

Gaultier and Farag through to Bellevue Final

Gregory Gaultier and Ali Farag will contest the inaugural PMI Bellevue Clasic final after wins in today’s semi-finals featuring the event’s top four seeds.

sp_30435Frenchman Gaultier continued his run of supreme form with a straight-game win over James Willstrop in a repeat of their World Champs semi-final here in 2015.

The top seed was on top from the word go, and Willstrop, who had survived two tense five-setters to reach this stage, could never quite catch up despite a late charge in the third.

“I’m happy with my performances this week,” said Gaultier. “James is one of the top players and he’s very dangerous. I had to play at quite a fast pace to disrupt his game. I love playing here, so to make another final is a great feeling. I have no pressure, I’ve done everything I want to, everything is a bonus now.”

sp_30440Farag set up a repeat of the Grasshopper Cup final against Gaultier as he beat second seeded fellow Egyptian Marwan Elshorbagy in four games.

Farag took early control in the first two games, and although Elshorbagy reduced the deficit Farag took a run of quick points from the middle of the fourth to seal his place in the final.

“Marwan’s such a dangerous opponent,” he said, “but I was happy with how I played the match today. It feels great to reach a second successive final, I just hope I can do better against Greg than the last time!”
